TV still remains the preferred media of choice: viewers watched 2 more hours of TV per month in the first quarter of 2010, and viewers are simultaneously using the Internet while watching TV, compared to the same period a year ago. Average time spent doing both activities up 9.8% to 3 hours and 41 minutes. Watching, surfing and Tweeting at the same time is also a popular trend. This allows viewers to respond to program and give direct feedback on what is being broadcast.
The data collected as we zero in on viewer patterns will tell us how Hawaiian officials, leaders and residents are adapting to a more sustainable state.
Eco Effect will rely on independent market research such as Neilsen TV ratings for accurate viewership numbers and demographics. Demographic reports from Nielsen indicate that the lowest overall TV viewing is by teens, with viewing increasing with each older age break. And women continue to watch more television than men, with 54 percent of all TV consumed by women.
Direct Viewer Response:
Data will be collected after the each episode as to viewers thoughts about sustainability and how they expect the State will achieve 70% renewable energy by 2030. Quizzes will also ask viewers to indicate what they are doing to live sustainable. Those responses will be measured over the season in 2011.
With weekly giveaways that allow viewers to respond to questions online quizzes about Eco Effect TV episodes, as well as in home eco challenges, we can measure response through precise website statistics. These measures such as Google Analytics will let us know who, where and when viewers are watching. Google tracks home by home, and we can see viewership on a geographical map of the target population.
